Congregation
A visual study of the congregation as one living body: the Anointed One is its head, every believer is a needed member, ministries serve the body, and the Word of YHWH is its foundation.
From the head to every member
The diagram is read as a connected body, not as a ladder of religious rank. Open each part to see the explanation and the passages from apostolic writings and letters used in the original project.
01The head
Yeshua the Anointed One is the head of the congregation. The body receives its unity, direction, and growth from him; no human office takes his place over the body.
Apostolic writings and letters: Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 4:14–16; 1 Corinthians 11:3.
02The body and its members
The congregation is one body with many distinct members. Each person receives gifts and a part to fulfil; no member can dismiss another as unnecessary. When every part works according to its measure, the whole body grows and builds itself up in love.
Apostolic writings and letters: 1 Corinthians 12:12–28; Romans 12:4–8; Ephesians 4:16, 25.
03Elders and overseers
Elders are appointed within local congregations to watch over and care for the flock. Their authority is expressed through sound teaching, mature character, hospitality, and personal example—not domination. The original study treats “elder,” “presbyter,” “overseer,” and “bishop” as descriptions of this responsibility rather than separate ranks.
Apostolic writings and letters: Titus 1:5–9; 1 Timothy 3:1–7; 1 Peter 5:1–4; Acts 14:23; Acts 20:28; Hebrews 13:7, 17.
04Ministries that equip the body
Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are given to equip the people for service and to build up the body toward maturity. They are functions within the congregation, not a separate class standing above it.
- Apostle
- A messenger sent with a commission.
- Prophet
- One who makes known and declares.
- Evangelist
- A bearer of good news.
- Pastor
- A shepherd entrusted with care.
- Teacher
- One who explains and instructs.
Apostolic writings and letters: Ephesians 4:11–16; 1 Corinthians 12:27–31.
05Deacons
Deacons are entrusted with practical service so that real needs are met without neglecting prayer and the ministry of the Word. The project emphasizes tested character, sincerity, self-control, faithfulness, and responsible care of one’s household.
Apostolic writings and letters: Acts 6:2–4; 1 Timothy 3:8–12.
06The foundation: the Word of YHWH
The Word of YHWH forms the foundation beneath the entire model. Scripture—the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings—teaches truth, exposes error, corrects our path, trains us in righteous living, and equips the people of YHWH for every good work. Apostolic writings and letters do not replace Scripture; they must be read and tested through the Word of YHWH. Every role and relationship in the congregation is therefore accountable to the Word of YHWH.
Apostolic writings and letters: 2 Timothy 3:16–17.
Different parts, one shared life
The model brings the apostolic teachings together into one picture: the Anointed One leads, the Word grounds, servants equip, and every member participates in the health and growth of the body.
